Billy Monger will make the move to EuroFormula Open this weekend as he contests the Winter Series in Paul Ricard. Consisting of several test sessions and a shortened test and race weekend schedule, the Winter Series will provide recently announced BRDC SuperStar Monger with a great insight into a season’s racing in the pan-European championship.
Having previously competed with Carlin in the BRDC British F3 Championship, Monger and the Farnham based team have forged a strong relationship which saw the 19-year-old claim three podiums last season, not least his third place on return to racing after his life-changing accident in 2017. Monger, who raced a specially modified car in British F3 now aims for a full season racing in EuroFormula Open in 2019.
Visiting F1 rated circuits and the prestigious Pau Grand Prix, EuroFormula Open prepares drivers for series such as FIA F3 and F2 amongst others. With a vast amount of track time each weekend, drivers benefit from a qualifying session and race on both Saturday and Sunday, allowing drivers to fully utilise track time and make progress throughout each race weekend.
Speaking about the weekend ahead, Monger said, “I’m really excited to be racing again. It seems a long time since we were last racing in British F3 in early October! The Dallara F3 is a great car and a real step-up from what I’ve experienced before. There are still some issues to overcome in the cockpit, but we’re working hard to get them resolved as quickly as possible.
“Our sponsorship package is coming together now and I’m confident that this is just the start of another great season.”
Trevor Carlin added, “This weekend will be another challenge for Billy. It’s another move up the motorsport ladder, as well as visiting a circuit he has never raced on before. Billy faces challenges that are unthinkable to other drivers, simply getting comfortable in the car is a big hurdle, but one that he approaches with his normal determination and good humour. Our main aim this weekend is to get him comfortable and competitive as he prepares for the season ahead. Hopefully, subject to current sponsorship negotiations, this is just the start of his season in EuroFormula Open.”
Track action will get underway on Friday, with one qualifying session and two races on Saturday. Monger will also take part in a two-day test in Barcelona from 8-9 March.
