Zak O’Sullivan has clinched a race victory and a further podium position in Croft as he continued his Championship campaign in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford Ecoboost series. The continued strong effort from the British racer has meant that with just two race weekends remaining he has successfully brought the lead of the championship within his grasp. Christian Mansell meanwhile added to his fantastic rookie season meaning he leads the first-year driver standings by an impressive 43 points while Matias Zagazeta continued to push well throughout the course of the weekend’s two races to secure points in race two.
Qualifying was a well-fought battle for the entire field on Saturday morning – with just two races this weekend, the push for pole and vital points throughout Saturday and Sunday was even more tense than normal. O’Sullivan dealt with the pressure well to set the third quickest time, Mansell ninth and Zagazeta 11th. Racing from these positions later on Saturday afternoon, O’Sullivan was clearly on a mission and had soon found his way up to second before hunting down the lead of the race. Importantly, Championship leader Luke Browning had fallen down the order which meant that O’Sullivan was even keener to capitalise.
On only the second lap of the race, O’Sullivan soon made his way past Casper Stevenson for the lead of the race before pulling a gap and taking his sixth victory of the 2020 season. Mansell meanwhile made the most of the tricky conditions to get himself on the rookie podium in tenth overall while Zagazeta crossed the line in 12th.
The second, and final, race of the weekend took place on Sunday afternoon having been set with the second-fastest times from qualifying the previous day. Starting from third again, O’Sullivan made another great start and soon had Browning set in his sights. The pair fought well together with the Carlin driver coming out on top before closing the gap to eventual race winner Stevenson. O’Sullivan’s strong weekend means that he has closed the gap in the championship standings to just 13 points.
Mansell raced well throughout the 20-minute showing to take another rookie victory, sixth across the line in the overall standings, while Zagazeta picked up points in tenth.
