Daruvala wins in Spa

Written by Carlin

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala has returned to the very top step of the podium this weekend following a strong weekend of racing in the FIA Formula Three European Championship at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. Daruvala graced the podium a further time with a fantastic third place finish during the second race of the weekend while Sacha Fenestraz, Ferdinand Habsburg and Nikita Troitskiy all took points home over the course of the three races on offer. Ameya Vaidyanathan left the weekend with his best finish in the competitive championship taking 12th position in the opening race.

A uncharacteristically hot weekend welcomed the team to Spa and it was Daruvala who took first blood during qualifying on Thursday with a brilliant performance to land pole position as his own. Falling back initially off the line for the opening race of the weekend, Daruvala was then able to get a great run up Raidillon and along the Kemmel straight to steal the lead of the race back as his own. Controlling the pace well at the front Jehan was the first to take the chequered flag and stand on the top step of the podium with his first win this season.

However it was a tough race for the rest of the Carlin team who found themselves caught up in incidents – both Habsburg and Troitskiy were non-finishers while Fenestraz finished just outside the points after contact in the early stages. Meanwhile Vaidyanathan took an FIA F3 career-best finish of 12th.

The second race of the weekend yielded a fantastic team result with Daruvala once again standing on the podium – however this time in third place. Team mates Fenestraz, Troitskiy and Habsburg all picked up points for their respective finishes of seventh, eighth and tenth while Vaidyanathan finished 16th.

The final race of the weekend was spent in tricky conditions – rain before the start left the track damp however not quite wet enough for full wet-weather tyres. Starting on slicks, on a rapidly drying track, the race was another fantastic spectacle despite a challenging race for the team.
