Carlin is pleased to announce Devlin DeFrancesco as the first driver in the team’s 2018 FIA Formula Three European Championship line up. The Canadian racer, who has been with the team for the past two seasons after joining the Carlin Academy in 2014, looks ahead to his third consecutive race season with the British team as he takes on his first full time year in the highly competitive Championship.

DeFrancesco spent the 2017 season racing in the Euroformula Open Championship with success which saw him take victory in Barcelona and a total seven podiums on his way to the third in the Championship. Also securing multiple rookie victories and podiums over the course of the season, the 17-year-old racer was a contender and force to be reckoned with as he took the Spanish F3 crown.

Using the latter half of the season to gain experience in a new Championship, DeFrancesco joined Carlin’s FIA Formula Three European Championship team for the final two rounds of the season. DeFrancesco then topped off his year with a debut appearance at the FIA World Cup Macau Grand Prix in which he impressed with his ability to learn the intricacies of the challenging circuit well. Despite an unlucky end to the race itself, DeFrancesco was on the pace throughout the weekend and secured a strong qualifying result.

DeFrancesco now looks ahead to the 2018 season in which in he will focus on the FIA Formula Three European Championship. Starting the season in May, the calendar takes in familiar circuits for DeFrancesco such as Silverstone and Hungary however will also challenge the young Canadian with new events to look forward to such as the Pau Grand Prix which will kick off the season.

DeFrancesco said of the signing, “I’m thrilled to be back with Carlin for another year! I’ve raced with them ever since I started my career in single-seaters and they’ve really helped me progress and to reach a really high level. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together next year, in what is the most competitive championship around.”

Racing director Trevor Carlin added, “We are delighted to be able to announce Devlin as our first F3 driver for the 2018 season. He has been part of the team for three years now; starting in the Academy before racing in British Formula Four and Euroformula Open so we’ve really watched him mature and grow into the racer he’s become today. He’s already a proven race winner in both those championships and we know that he has the potential to be competitive in FIA Formula Three and is already making some great progress in testing.”
